The Timing Is Never Right!

For all the most important things in life, the timing
always sucks.

So if you’re waiting for a good time top quit your job, or
waiting for that right moment to pop the question, or
waiting for the perfect time to start your online
business…

…NOW is the best time!

The stars will never all be aligned together and the
traffic lights of life will never all be green at the same
time. No, the world doesn’t hate you, but it won’t go out
of its way to help you either.

YOU are the best person to help yourself. Only YOU can
take action in order to achieve your goals. Yes, you WILL
make mistakes. But who cares. Nothing can’t be fixed.

If you’re worried about what will happen, do this little
exercise…

Sit down and think of the absolute worse thing that can
happen if you take your desired action. Think about this
for a few days by replaying it over and over in your mind.

Yes it will be scary at first, but after you’ve run
through it a few times and you’ve become comfortable with
this scenario, think of how long it would take to fix any
problems that arise.

Now the worst case scenario rarely ever happens, but if
you can live with what MAY happen, go ahead and just do
it. You can simply fix any problems as you go.

Listen, the timing is rarely (if ever) right. Putting
things off to “another day” is a desase that will steal
your dreams. If it’s important to you, just do it and
correct course along the way.

5-Step Plan – Selecting the Right Merchants (Part 2)

In the last lesson we started Step #3 of the plan and
today we continue with part 2 of this step.

We finished last lesson talking about the Return Rate of
the product you’re likely to promote and here are the tips
I promised you to help you get started…

In Share a Sale, when you look through the merchant list
to find new ones to join, there is a variety of information
that is given to you in that list.

The seven-day average commission
The seven-day average sale
The seven-day reversal
The seven-day EPC

The seven-day average commission tells you how much
commission other affiliates have made on average with this
merchant over the last seven days.

Likewise the average sale tells you how much sales have
been made from affiliates over the last seven days. The
reversal number lets to know how many of those sales were
canceled, returned and refunded.

And of course the seven-day EPC simply tells you what the
average earnings per click is for affiliates with this
merchant in the last week.

These numbers can be important in most cases. Keep in mind
however that if the merchant is quite new, then these
numbers will not be very helpful.

If a merchant has just set up with share a sale in the
past month or two, they may have fairly low statistics for
the commissions and sale amounts.

However, if a merchant has been in the network for quite
some time, and these numbers are low or nonexistent, that
usually indicates there may be a problem with either their
products or their agreements. Thus other affiliates have
avoided promoting them.

Some common reasons affiliates may choose to not promote a
merchant include: unusually low commission amounts for the
niche, unusually short affiliate cookie durations, or the
presence of third-party advertising and affiliate products
on the merchant’s website which the affiliates will not be
paid for.

There are similar indicators at Commission Junction which
can help you determine which merchants to promote as well.
Unfortunately these are not as cut and dry as the stats you
can get from share a sale.

Commission Junction will show you the three-month EPC,
seven-day EPC, and a visual representation of their network
earnings. The network earnings are simply shows you how a
merchant compares to other merchants in the network.

A fully green bar indicates that this merchant is one of
the top performers in the commission Junction network. A
bar which only has one or two green boxes filled in
however, means that this merchant is at the lower or lowest
end of the earnings scale compared to the rest.

The three-month and seven-day EPC can help you determine
how much other affiliates are earning with a given
merchant, but again this isn’t as helpful as it could be if
there are not many affiliates promoting.

This number can also be misleading, depending upon how
different affiliates are promoting the merchant.

If for example, an affiliate has started a brand-new pay
per click campaign in the past month, and they are doing
quite well with that campaign, then the merchant’s EPC
numbers will reflect the success of that one affiliate. So
even if a hundred other affiliates are not doing well at
all with this merchant, the numbers might still look good.

Similar problems can arise with the network earnings
progress bar. If there are not many affiliates promoting a
merchant, it could appear as if that merchant does not
perform well.

Unfortunately we don’t have access to all of the raw
statistics we need to make a more solid determination of
the best merchants to choose. That’s why looking at these
performance numbers is only part of the selection process.

One obvious selection criteria that many affiliates do not
think about, is whether or not they recognize a specific
merchant name. If there is a merchant in the network who
the affiliate shops with themselves, and they like, this
may be an excellent choice for them to start promoting.

Likewise if there are very well known names in the
merchant list for your niche, regardless of whether you
shop with them or not, these are likely to be very good
merchants to select. Why?

Name recognition counts, particularly when you’re selling
expensive products!

Once again we’ve run out of room, but in the next lesson
we will finalize Step #3 so you can then move on to Step #4
in the overall plan.

Traffic Basics – Monitoring Your Website!

In the last lesson we talked about reciprocal linking and
how it can effect your business. Today we’re going to go
over some tools that you can use to monitor your website.

Chances are if you’ve been online for awhile you know that
you just can’t build your website, plug in the right
keywords and expect your traffic and ranking will remain
constant.

It takes a bit more effort than that. You have to keep
track of your results, plus keep a sharp eye on the
competition.

Doing this doesn’t have to be a complicated process. There
are many useful and free tools to help you find out what
exactly what is going on.

Here is a quick list of some of the tools that you can use
to keep track of your site:

1. Keyword Ranking Tool – Allows you to track historical
search engine result placement data for any keyword you
choose:

2. Backlink Tracker Tool – Allows you to check search
engines for the number of back links to your site:

3. Geotargeting Website To Country Tool – This tool allows
you to find the physical location of any website. It can be
used to determine the location of your hosting service, or
research the country location of a particular competitor’s
website:

4. Geovisitors – This will automatically detect where your
site visitors are located all over the world:

5. Yahoo! WebRank -  This tool will allow you to check the
ranking of any website in Yahoo:

6. PageRank Toolbar Widget For Macintosh – Allows you to
check the ranking of a website using a Mac or Apple

7. Google AdSense Sandbox Tool – This provides you with
charts and reports which will help you analyze traffic,
clicks, and results from your AdSense advertising:

8. Google AdSense Charts and Graphs – If you have an
AdSense account, you can analyze your website address or
another website address to see what Google ads will be
displayed:

9.  Free Web Counter – This is a free website counter
which you can use on your website to track your traffic and
hits:

Now,  of course there are many more tools available other
than the one from digitalpoint.com. For instance, I like to
use this tool Xenu’s Link Sleuth, it allows you to test
your websites for broken links:

There is also software that you can download and use to
monitor multiple processes at one time. Most of them come
with free trials and will require a slight learning curve,
so that you can use them effectively.

To find a piece of software that will work for you just do
a search and you will discover that there are many
available.

I guess the point that I am trying to make is that it is
very important to monitor your website, whether you use
free tools or paid software.

Creating Quality Articles in Minutes!

Articles are a very popular and easy way of getting
traffic to your blog or website. Articles are popular
because search engines, website owners and ezine
publishers love fresh, quality content.

A good article that informs the reader about a certain
topic qualifies as fresh, quality content. Therefore if you
can create quality articles you can get backlinks and
traffic to your website.

If you are a blog owner, creating quality articles for
submission to the major article directories is very easy
because your blog is already be filled with quality content.

5-Step Plan – Selecting the Right Merchants!

In the last lesson we finalized Step #2 and today we move
on to Step #3…

…Selecting the Right Merchants!

If you’re using an affiliate network such as Commission
Junction or Share a Sale you will need to apply as an
affiliate for each merchant you want to promote.

In most cases, affiliates are approved automatically.
There are some merchants however, who are very particular
about who is allowed to promote their products.

So in rare cases you may find that you are denied as an
affiliate for a particular merchant you want to promote.

If you’re in a large network however, there should be
plenty of alternative merchants for you to select from.

- WHAT TO LOOK FOR

If you’re new to the affiliate marketing industry, you may
find merchant selection to be somewhat confusing or
difficult.

This is not actually as confusing or difficult as it might
seem, you just need to learn how each network does things.

The first thing to look for of course are merchants who
sell the products you want to promote to your niche. In
fact, for this particular strategy you’ll want to choose
merchants who have plenty of products in your niche.

If they only have five or 10 products, they will not work
well. You’ll want to choose merchants who have at least a
hundred products or more.

Once you’ve found those, then there are many other factors
you’ll want to consider. Not every one of these will apply
in every situation, but we’ll cover them anyway since
they’re the most common concerns.

Commission Levels:
The commission percentage earned as an affiliate is
usually very important.

If you choose a niche which has very low profit margins
for example, you may find that the merchants are only
offering about 1% to 3% in affiliate commissions.

Low profit margin markets are those which compete
primarily on price. These include computers, electronics
and digital cameras.

Other markets however, will pay between 5% and 10%
commissions. And there are even some who pay as much as 12%
to 15%. It’s quite rare to see commission levels above 15%
for tangible products.

One benefit of promoting tangible products through the
affiliate networks however is that if you sell quite a bit
of product for them, most of them will increase the
percentage rate they pay you.

Some merchants have this scaled commission rate in place
from the start, while others will give it to you if you
request it.

Return Rates:
In most affiliate networks there is some way to determine
how well a merchant’s products convert, as well as how
often their products are returned.

This is not always easy to determine, and it’s not obvious
either. I could write an entire book almost on this subject
alone.

For just getting started your best bet is to explore at
the affiliate network you have chosen to work with and
become as familiar with their information as you can.

That’s all the room we have today for this lesson. In the
next lesson we will continue with Step #3 by giving you
some tips to help you get started.

Traffic Basics – Reciprocal Link Building!

In the last lesson we talked about referrer logs. Today
we’re going to talk about reciprocal link building and how
it will help your website ranking.

When it comes to SEO, reciprocal link building goes a long
way towards giving your site good rankings. Especially if
your site is relevant or related to the topic and subject
of the site you are linking to.

It is also a very effective way to drive traffic to your
site!

Reciprocal links have been around a long time.
Unfortunatel, they are an often overlooked or an under-used
method and as with any strategy there are advantages and
disadvantages involved.

So, should you be using reciprocal linking in your
marketing strategy?

That is a very good question and in today’s lesson we’re
going to go over some things you should consider about
reciprocal linking and how it will effect your business.

Let me ask you this question…

How many times have you searched for a Website to link to
only to find out that they don’t even have a links page?

Of those that do, few have an area on their website that
actually welcomes you to request a link trade. It seems
these websites are missing the boat when it comes to the
World Wide Web’s shockingly efficient linking system.

Before you begin your reciprocal linking plan, here are
some things that you should consider:

- Make sure that you are linked to relevant sites meaning
you both have the same subject matter and at the same time
all the links are also related to each other.

- Remember that it’s more about quality than quantity
when it comes to reciprocal link building. Look for quality
sites that are related to your topic.

- Keep in mind that this is a long and sometimes
frustrating process because you still have to check to see
if other websites have agreed to the link exchange and you
will need to check periodically to see if the link to your
site is still present on the websites that you have made
exchanges with.

- Be prepared for rejection. Some webmasters may turn down
your request. If that’s the case, you may want to take
their link off your site.

- Examine the other sites link pages – are they indexed
and visited by the major search engines? If the site
doesn’t have good rankings it probably won’t do you any
good to link to them.

- When requesting a link exchange, consider the links that
are already displayed on the other site. They should be
relevant to your website. Also take the time to check and
make sure that the site doesn’t have a lot of broken links -
this will effect the way in which search engines spider the
site.

- Another thing to consider is how many links are
displayed on the page you were thinking about linking to.
It is a good idea not to link with a page has more than 30
to 40 links on it.

Be sure to follow the basic link exchange rules set in
place by the sites you want to  trade links with.

The site that you are exchanging links with should exist
in major search engines and have good traffic ranking.
Alexa.com is a great way to check out a site’s rankings and
traffic flow.

All and all, reciprocal linking can be a good, free way of
achieving high website ranking, but keep in mind that you
should periodically check the status of your links and site
rankings, so that you can get the most out of your efforts.

3 Tips to Achieve Your Online Goals!

Do you dream of the day where you have an online business
that makes you plenty of money each and every month so you
can be your own boss and do what YOU want, WHEN you want?

This is not an unrealistic dream!

You CAN create your own profitable online business – and
make it a very enjoyable experience – IF you follow these
very simple & practical tips.

Tip #1 – Find an idea that you are excited about!

This is very important. To sustain your business in the
long-term you need to enjoy what you do. The only way to do
it is to find an idea, product and niche that you feel
passionate about.

Do some research online for ideas. Type a few terms into
the search engines and see what ideas you find in your
niche. You’ll be surprised at how many great ideas there
are for you to grab and make your own.

Tip #2 – You need to invest time AND money!

You must realize that you will need to invest some capital
into your online venture. This will be in the way of time
AND money.

Some things in life just aren’t free and this is one of
them. You need to start with some level of money to achieve
your outcome.

If you have more time than money, that’s fine. In the
beginning you can save money by doing most of the stuff you
need to do yourself. If you use the time you have wisely,
you will be rewarded over and over again.

The important thing to do is to sit down and work out a
comfortable budget of time and money… and then stick to
it.

If you can only afford to spend a fifty dollars per month
and a few hours per day on your online business, then do
some research to develop a plan BEFORE you get started.

Tip #3 – It will take time!

You need to understand that you will not start making your
fortune overnight. Yes there are some that do, but this is
not normal.

Do not try to take shortcuts because you think you can
have an easier path to faster profits. This will lead to
your downfall.

You need to understand and accept right from the start
that it may take several months, maybe much longer, before
you start showing any real profit.

You need to be patient and consistant. Don’t skip from one
scheme to another. Develop a step-by-step plan that is
right for you and follow it to the letter.

If you follow these tips, have faith and stick to your
plan and you will be handsomely rewarded for your efforts.

5-Step Plan – Selecting the Right Affiliate Networks!

In the last lesson we finalized Step #1 of your step-by-
step profit plan. Today we move on to Step #2, which is
to sign up with one or more affiliate networks.

Now first off you need to find the right affiliate
programs that have products that are relevent to your
selected niches.

In doing this you have two options…

You can either sign up with independent affiliate programs
or sign up with an affiliate network.

Independent programs are good but as a rule they only have
a single product that you can promote.

Your most beneficial option is to sign-up to an affiliate
network as this will give you access to MULTIPLE merchants
that have relevant products targeting your niche.

Having all of your merchants separate can result in a lot
of headaches and problems later on down the road. For
example, it may take you a while to start getting paid by
them.

This is because it may take you some time to generate
enough sales to meet the minimum payout requirements. Plus,
if that merchant does not have specific types of products,
then you’ll need to go find additional merchants.

If that merchant drops a particular line of products,
you’ll have the same problem. And if that merchant goes
away for whatever reason, you’ll find yourself stuck
without products to sell until you found a merchant
replacement.

By signing up with an affiliate network on the other hand,
you can generally find at least three merchants to supply
the products you need for your particular niche.

You also get the benefit of lower minimum payout amounts,
automated payment such as direct deposit to your bank
account, and the combined power of the sales you’re making
from all the merchants you belong to.

There are several large affiliate networks you can sign up
for. The best two that I recommend are Share a Sale and
Commission Junction.

Commission Junction is quite possibly the largest
affiliate network out there. It has thousands of merchants
and many of them are very well known names.

Commission Junction will send you your affiliate
commission payments each month that you’ve earned $25 or
more, and they also have a direct deposit option, which
makes receiving your funds much faster.

Share a Sale is considered a new affiliate network even
though it has been around for several years. It is a
smaller network and it has many smaller merchants.

Share a Sale is very popular because they are considered
to be more affiliate friendly than any other network. There
are also easier to get set up with, and they have some
great affiliate marketing tools.

Link share is another fairly large affiliate network that
some affiliates like to work with, and of course Amazon or
eBay are quite popular as well.

Amazon or eBay have almost everything for sale. Just be
sure to check that you can earn commissions as an affiliate
with them for the products you want to promote.

Once you’ve selected one or more affiliate networks to
work with, sign up with them now.

Traffic Basics – The Importance of Referrer Logs!

In the last lesson we talked about submitting your site to
the search engines. Today we are going to go over the
importance of referrer logs.

Referrer logging is used to allow web servers and websites
to identify where people are visiting them either for
promotional or security purposes.

Your referrer logs can determine which search engine your
visitors used to find your site and/or whether they come
from a ‘linked site’.

(Note: A ‘linked site’ is basically the URL of the
previous webpage from which your link was followed)

By default most hosting accounts include referrer logs. If
your web host does not provide a graphic report of your log
files, you can still view your referrer logs by logging
into the host server using free or low cost FTP software
such as these:

You can use a log analysis tool like those mentioned below
to create a graphic report from your log files so that the

In addition to identifying the search engine or the site
from where your visitor arrived, referrer logs can also
tell you what keywords or keyword phrases that your
visitors used to find your site.

You will find that once you are able to track the efforts
of all your SEO, advertising, affliate promotions, etc, you
will be able to figure out which ones are working the best
for you.

This way you can focus on improving the promotions that
are working and dumping those that arenn’t to try to
maximize your profits.

6 Tips for Squeeze Page Success!

In my experience one of the most successful methods of
monetizing your traffic is using a squeeze page.

A squeeze page offers information in exchange for a name
and email address.

This allows you to build your all your important list so
you can presell the products or services you promote at a
later stage.

Squeeze pages work great because you are giving your
visitors exactly what they are looking for… information.

What kind of information you decide to give away on your
squeeze page is entirely up to you, but it should be
informative and highly relevant to the product or service
you are promoting.

Here are some tips for squeeze page success:

1. Powerful attention grabbing headline that includes the
#1 benefit of what you are giving a way
2. Audio clip, video clip or both
3. At least 4 bullet points that outline the major
benefits of your freebie offer
5. An opt-in form that is linked to a reliable list
building and autoresponder service – I use Aweber
5. Link to a privacy policy statement located near the
opt-in form
6. An exit or pop under resistant to most pop up blockers
(Aweber currently provides this)

5-Step Plan – How to Find a Profitable Niche!

In the last lesson we discussed the 3 ideal things you need
to look for in a profitable niche market:

1. Longevity
2. High demand
3. Profitability

Due to a lack of space we were only able to touch on the
first two points (Longevity and High Demand), so today we
will discuss the third… Profitability.

Profitability:
Your niche needs to have potential customers who are
ready, willing and able to spend money. The more they are
able to spend, the more profitable the niche!

Ok. But how do you know if your niche market will be
profitable?

Let’s take the mobile ring tone market for instance. While
there may be huge demand for this type of service, the
targeted customer base is typically people under 18 who
have no credit card to join a subscription service.

Now we’re not saying you can’t make money with mobile
ringtones. This is no doubt a very profitable industry, but
the spending power of your potential customers is very
limited.

It is also very difficult to sell something when you can
freely access or download it from the internet.

A good example of this is cocktail mixing recipes. Yes
we’re sure that there are people who do buy books on how to
make cocktails. But anyone can simply do a search on the
internet and find free instructions on how to mix any
cocktail they like. So it would be hard to compete in this
market.

Ok. Let’s look an example of a Profitable niche?

We have previously mentioned the golf niche so we’ll
continue to use this niche as an example.

Even if you do not like golf yourself and you know nothing
about it, you probably realize that people who do like golf
tend to spend thousands of dollars on this passion. And
because they spend so much money, it can be a very
lucrative market to target.

In fact, any niche which involves a strong passion tends
to be extremely lucrative. Some examples include gardening,
crocheting, dogs, coin collecting, cars & motorcycles,
camping, home improvement, sports collectables, etc.

Notice something similar with all of these niches? They
all revolve around hobbies or special interests and these
normally invoke strong passion.

As a rule of thumb, most niche markets that target
hobbyists or special interest groups can be very lucrative
markets because these people are very passionate about
their particular topic.

And provided it has longevity, plus has a high demand AND
fulfils the profitability test, then you may well have an
excellent niche to target and you are ready to go to Step 2.

Traffic Basics – Submitting to the Search Engines!

In the last lesson we talked about keyword research and
tools.

In this lesson we are going to go over steps you need to
take when submitting your website to the search engines.

As we have discussed before, one of the best ways to get
the most out of your advertising and marketing campaign is
using basic SEO techniques, and by submitting your site to
the search engines.

No amount of press releases, newspaper ads, banner ads,
email or newsletter advertising will achieve the same
results.

That’s not to say that they aren’t effective and that you
shouldn’t use them but studies have shown that search
engine traffic can be much more beneficial.

The best way to submit your website for search engine
ranking and inclusion is to do it yourself or to hire an
expert to do it manually.

Beware of companies that promise automatic submission of
your website to hundreds of search engines. These are scams
and you will get NO benefit from doing this.

Before you begin to submit your website to search engines
ensure your websites are thoroughly designed to the
professional quality using the right keywords, good
graphics and pictures and the relevant content.

Do not submit websites that are incomplete as this will
harm your rankings.

While submitting to a search engine, make sure to provide
information about your website, keywords and any other
information that may be pertinent – including the name and
contact information of your business.

There are thousands of new websites being picked up every
day by the search engines, so simply submitting to a search
engine does not guarantee that your site will be
immediately listed or ranked highly. It may take quite
sometime before your site is reviewed by human editors.

One important factor to remember while submitting site is
to include a site map of your website which makes it easier
for the spiders (web robots) to crawl your entire site.
Search engines like Google have been known not to consider
submissions without site maps.

There are actually thousands of search engines and
directories, but here is a list of the most popular search
engines and directories that you can submit your site to:

Google
Yahoo
MSN
Whatuseek
ExactSeek
Scrubtheweb
AOL Search
HotBot
Search.com
Metacrawler
Dogpile
Lycos
LookSmart

Now at the start we talked about hiring a service that
will submit your site for you, but there is also software
available that you can use to submit your site to multiple
search engine’s at the same time.

If you decide you want to do your submissions yourself,
then using a good piece of software can make your job much
easier. Here is a quick list of some of the popular
