ADVERTISING YOUR WAY TO AN INCOME

There are multiple ways to use Internet advertising to generate income. A core element of Internet marketing is advertising, and it’s possible to take advantage of many of them for little, or sometimes, even no monetary investment. That’s because websites and search engines have designed ways to advertise that are complementary. In other words, you advertise and everyone involved makes money.

LINKS

So a stream of income can be generated through well-placed links. You will notice the term “well-placed” is used because a link placed in the wrong spot on the Internet can be fairly useless. For example, if you are selling food products containing meat, it would not make sense to place a link on a website that caters to vegetarians. How many people do you think will click on the link leading to your site? Not many!

Links can work both ways. You can place links to your website on the sites of others or other site owners may pay you to advertise on your site. A reciprocal link program is one where you and the other site have links to each other’s sites.

Reciprocal links provide two primary benefits. The first benefit is the fact that you increase your website traffic, which should lead to increased revenue. The second benefit is that a reciprocal link can lead to a better search engine ranking since each customer clicking on a link to your site will count towards its ranking.

You can sell advertising spots on your website to generate income.

BANNER ADS

When you go to the beach, chances are that you’ll see a small airplane flying and pulling a waving advertising banner. On the Internet, the banner is placed on a site and is usually long and narrow like a real-world banner would be. The most common size used is 468 pixels high and 60 pixels wide.

The banner ad can be static, and the website visitor will simply read what it has to say. If they like what is read, the customer then clicks on it to get to the website or product being advertised.

Banners can be placed on your own website or on other websites just like reciprocal links. Banner ads are not as popular as they used to be, and some Web page viewers find them to be somewhat annoying. So you should be careful about how and when you use banner ads.

EMAIL MARKETING

Another form of advertising that can create a revenue steam is email marketing. Email marketing is the Internet equivalent of direct marketing. You can send emails to anyone you choose, and all you need are email addresses. The promotional emails can offer interested people information about your website, products, or services. In the email, there will be embedded links taking the customer directly to the location on your website where he or she will find what is being promoted.

Email marketing should never degrade into a spam campaign. Spam is unsolicited emails. Sending mass emails to people who have not requested the information will probably not generate any website traffic, and thus, no income either. But you will manage to annoy a lot of people and give your company a bad reputation.

SEARCH ENGINE MARKETING (SEM)

Search engine marketing is not the same as search engine optimization. Search engine marketing (SEM) is a more comprehensive term that includes a range of activities designed to promote a website on the Internet, and thereby, create income.

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION TO IMPROVE WEB PAGE RANKING

Search engine optimization is the process of designing a website so that it appears high on the list of search engine results after someone does a particular search. Search engines are sets of software, like Google or Yahoo, that collect information on websites and then produce website rankings.

Search engine optimization involves using keywords that are collected by the search engine crawlers. The statistics are used to create the non-paid rankings. The theory is that the higher a webpage is ranked, the more traffic that will be driven to a website. But there are millions of pages on the Internet now and not everyone can make it onto the first page of search results simply through keyword use. That is why it’s important to use a variety of marketing strategies to generate income.

SUBMITTING WEBSITES TO ONLINE DIRECTORIES

You can submit your website to the major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN, but there are many specialty directories available also. Many of the directories are free, while others require a fee.

Directories are organized listings of topics or areas of interest with relevant websites listed. Directories can save Internet browsers a lot of time while also driving traffic to your site.

PAY-PER-CLICK

Like most advertising strategies, the income earned comes from driving traffic to your website where a purchase is made by a customer. Pay-Per-Click is a process whereby site owners bid on particular keywords that potential customers might use while doing a search. The Internet user enters a search term, and if it contains the keywords you purchased, your ad will appear. When a person clicks on the link on the search engine results page to enter your website, you must pay for the ad.

Pay-per-click also applies to ads placed on other websites that are related to the keywords you purchased. Once again, when someone clicks on the ad, you will pay a per-click fee.

The ultimate goal of pay-per-click is to generate as much website traffic as possible. The amount of the bid you place for particular keywords will determine how much you end up paying per click. A carefully managed pay-per-click program can generate significant website traffic, which can lead to more paying customers.

PAY-PER-IMPRESSION

In the pay-per-impression plans, when an impression is loaded, the commission is calculated. Normally, the commission is set in terms of cost per thousand impressions. There are also companies that will set a flat monthly fee.

The definition of an impression is a single Web page or advertisement. There are different ways to count impressions, so you should be careful to evaluate the terms of any commission agreement you enter into.

GOOGLE ADWORDS AND ADSENSE

The Internet search engine giant Google has set the standard in many areas. The Google program AdWords is a pay-per-click program, but it has become so popular, it is being described under its own heading.

The most used pay-per-click program on the Internet is Google AdWords. In AdWords, you buy advertising space based on the keywords you have purchased. After buying the keyword, your advertisement will show up on the results pages whenever a customer searches using the keyword you purchased. Your ad will normally show up as a sponsored link on the top of the page or along the side of the results listings.

AdWords uses technology called contextual advertising to place your ad on the same Internet page that contains content relative to your keyword. So where does AdSense enter the picture?

AdSense is directly related to AdWords. The AdSense program will add those contextual advertisements on your site after selling the ads to the appropriate advertisers. The program also tracks the pay-per-clicks and remits the appropriate amount of money to the website owner.

AdSense has two parts. AdSense for Content is the program that places the contextual advertisements on your website. AdSense for Search lets you add Google search. Both programs will generate advertising revenue. AdSense for Content places the ad and then tracks the clicks to determine how much to pay you. AdSense for Search adds a Google search box to a website. The idea is that visitors to your site can use the search box to do other searches without leaving the site. The longer someone stays on your site, the better the probability that the potential customer will click on an ad, and thus, create advertising revenue for you.

Advertising on the Internet can be profitable when the Internet marketing campaign is strategically developed. Through the placement of links, ads, and keywords, it is possible to drive traffic to your website where great content promotes sale closure. But with programs like Google AdWords and AdSense, you can also earn income from ads placed on your site by Google. You also always have the option of selling your own ad space.

In the next section, affiliate programs are discussed. This is another way to generate income through your website.

OTHER

There are many other types of online advertising formats, including audio or video ads. They are now being used regularly on websites, and the principles for commission paying or earning are the same as those that are applied to the more traditional text links. For example, when someone views an online video, the view would be counted similarly to someone clicking on a flat link.

The bottom line is that the more links of any kind you have spread across the Internet, the more money you will make. Links can be in newsletters and eBooks too.

AFFILIATE PROGRAMS

Affiliate programs are the same as a performance-based marketing program. It is an online referral system that pays a sales commission to you for helping to sell the products of another website. In other words, you place a link on your site that a customer can click on to get to another site you don’t mind advertising.

The links can be single-sided links that appear on a website or they can be cross-links. In the cross-link set-up, a link to your site is placed on a website for a business that has placed their link on yours.

There are affiliate service providers specializing in setting up affiliates. The affiliate program would provide you with the information you need to set up the ad on your site. When a customer clicks on the link, they are taken to the originating site. The affiliate program tracks the referrals, sales, and commissions earned.

There are different ways to define a transaction: pay-per-click or pay-per-action. Pay-per-click pays a commission based on the number of times a customer clicks on the ad link, regardless of whether a sale is made or not. With pay-per-action, the qualifying transaction on which the commission is paid must be defined. It could be a closed sale, a request for information, a new customer, and so on.

First, you need to find the right partners. If you sell Bibles, you would not want ads on your site that promote lingerie. Second, if you need to establish a true link campaign strategy, you must understand the market you intend to reach and then do the research to find out how your intended market shops the Internet. There are millions of ads placed on the wrong sites; as a result, the customers fail to click through and income is never generated.

BLOGS

A blog is a short name for a Web log. It is a website that has a particular format in terms of information provided. There are online running commentaries or information posts that allow other readers to submit comments. Blogging is becoming a popular form of communication, which means that there is an opportunity to earn advertising income from blogging.

A blogging website must be maintained on a regular basis because material on the site needs to be fresh and updated to be relevant. Most blogging sites are dedicated to a particular topic like politics or a personal hobby or interest. That means there are keywords that can be easily identified for programs like Google’s AdWords.

The best way to make some money on a blog is to have ads placed on the site. As discussed earlier, there are a number of ways to earn money through advertising, including pay-per-click ads and affiliate ads.

In these situations, the money you earn from writing is your income stream.

There are many ways to make money on the Internet. The discussion up to this point has been focused on adding links and ads to existing sites. There are affiliate programs, email marketing campaigns, and many other ways to generate multiple income streams.

The inveterate Internet entrepreneur will most likely have multiple streams of income from a well-designed Internet marketing program. But the first step before the marketing is the development of the business itself. How can you choose the right keywords or pick an affiliate if you don’t have a well-defined business model?

The Internet is the land of opportunity and variety. There are multiple ways to become an entrepreneur.

• Develop your own Internet-based business
• Buy an online franchise
• Open a store on eBay
• Join Yahoo Merchant Solutions
• Sell on an auction site
• Become an Amazon Marketplace seller

This is a post on using Internet marketing to generate income and not about how to set up an Internet business, so the discussion will not go into detail on the types of businesses. But everyone should be aware of the various types of online business formats that are now available. Savvy Internet vendors will often combine one or more formats in order to generate maximum revenue, and that is where the power of the Internet is increased exponentially.

For example, when you visit eBay stores, there is often an embedded link on the site. The link will take the shopper to the vendor’s Internet website where additional products or services are offered. These vendors sell through eBay and through their own website. It is like having two websites to attract millions of potential customers. Income will flow from both sites.

This goes back to the idea discussed earlier. To make full use of the Internet’s ability to generate income, you should implement more than one income-producing strategy. In this way, there are multiple streams of income flowing at all times.

For example, it’s possible to make money creating a blog, but a blog absolutely has to be kept up-to-date to be useful. People are not going to click through ads placed on blog sites that have not been updated for months.

In other words, it is important to not take on too much and fail to do a good job managing your Internet income-producing opportunities. It’s wonderful to have so many options available, but that does not negate the fact that you must manage your business professionally and with foresight and goals.

CONCLUSION

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Internet today is the fact that you don’t even need a website to make money! For example, you can sign up as an Amazon bookseller and sell your used books through Amazon Marketplace. You sell and ship the books and Amazon deposits your revenue in your bank account every two weeks.

Though establishing advertising links that pay is a little more complex, the entire process is getting simpler by the day thanks to the many affiliate programs and sites dedicated to connecting the right Internet partners. In the early days of the Internet, you had to “go it alone,” but that is simply not true anymore.

The key to success is remaining focused on your goals and your business plan. You can develop a business plan that does not include a website, but you still need to establish goals and objectives. It’s easy to get overstretched with all the tempting offers to help you make money. But whatever arrangements you agree to, they must be managed over time.

Think of it this way. You can set up links with an affiliate program, but if no one ever clicks through, you’ll never make any money. You can keep the arrangement going, but the question is: Why?! You need to look at your web statistics, analyze the income produced, and make adjustments as necessary.

In Parts 1 and 2 of this series, I shared with you some quick and easy ways to leverage your investment by capitalizing on other people’s resources.

Specifically I showed you how to take advantage of other people’s hot products which they spent a lot of time, effort, and money on brainstorming, creating, and then getting them to the “ready to sell” stage.

All you had to do was “plug in” to their existing money machines and start earning a profit…as much as 100% of it.

In this section, I would like to share with you an easy way to create traffic out of thin air! (If you don’t already know, “traffic” is just a fancy word for the process of getting people – or potential customers – to your offer (for the product you’re trying to promote.)

One of most important components of the information-marketing business, i.e. the business we’ve been discussing in this series, is…well… information!

But, we’re not just talking about any ol’ information. We’re referring to information that is valuable and useful to your readers.

Now, you could write this information yourself. However, since the focus of this report is to create traffic (and eventually money) out of thin air, we are going to continue focusing on the quickest and easiest ways to get things done.

And, once again, we are going to capitilize on other people’s resources (which they are happy to share with you, by the way) in creating this valueable and useful content.

One of the best ways to find valueable content to repurpose and distribute is to, once again, do a search on Google.

This time, you are going to search for “free private label rights” (also known as “PLR”) that other authors and marketers are offering out there.

Many of these PLR products (or packages) can be retrieved for free – and that’s why we are first going to search for the free alternatives.

Once you find some of this free content, by searching on Google, you can then repurpose and/or repackage it for consumption by your readers, i.e. potential (future) buyers.

Important: Before you start distributing somebody else’s PLR content, be sure to read through their “terms and conditions” for that product/package.

If someone doesn’t allow free distribution of his/her content, you should look for other sources/authors. (If the terms and conditions are not very clear about the “free distribution” of any particular content, don’t risk it… just skip that package and find another one that outlines its distribution terms more clearly.)

Obviously, you would be interested in finding and distributing relevant content. In other words, if you are trying to sell a product about bodybuilding, you would want to search for free PLR content on bodybuilding, or at least on the general “health and fitness” subject area.

There’s no point in trying to distribute content about fishing if you’re trying to sell a bodybuilding product. The traffic (potential buyers) that you generate from the “fishing-related” content won’t be interested in buying your product because the traffic won’t be targeted since they would be interested in the subject of “fishing”…not “bodybuilding.”

Relevancy is very important.

Okay… once you have found relevant, free PLR content that you have permission to repackage and distribute freely (according to the “terms and conditions” of the content provider,) you are ready to get your content prepared for distribution.

Basically, you should read through the free PLR content to ensure that it’s of good quality. You may also want to edit it to some extent, in order to make it unique to you. (This is still quicker and easier than having to write all of the content yourself. So you’re still saving time and effort here.)

If you feel you can add to the content to make it even better, then heck, do it!

If you find an entire book (or report) as one of your free PLR content, you can break up the content of that book into shorter pieces or articles…and offer them as various “Parts” or sections.

After you’ve broken the content up into short articles, you can add your affliate (or resale product) sales/promotional links to the end of those articles, and start posting them on the Internet. (I’ve explained how to get those links, in previous sections of this series.)

One of the best places to post your “new” content is on article databases like ezinearticles.com.

Important: Before you post your content to these article databases, be sure to read through the rules and terms of those databases, to be sure you’re following their submission procedures precisely.

By doing so, you will ensure that your articles have a much better chance of getting accepted and published by these article databases.

Remember, these article databases are already getting a lot of traffic, i.e. readers and potential buyers. So, abide by their rules if you want to capitalize on their traffic.

In Part 1 of this series, I shared with you an easy way to leverage and capitalize on other people’s efforts and resources.

And, in doing so, those other people would reward you with fat commissions…by giving you as much as 75% of the profits earned per product sold.

In this section, I would like to share with you a way to build on that initial strategy, so that you can keep all (100%) of the profits generated from any sale of the product.

While there are some product owners/sellers who offer 100% of the profits to you, the affiliate, for any sales you generate, the products being sold via those setups are often very low-ticket items, i.e. you would usually make very low commissions…anywhere from $5 to $20 per sale, even when you get to keep 100% of the profits.

And, while that may be okay for some people, at least for starters, why not try to make a lot more money per sale, for a little more investment of time and effort on your part!

If you’re interested in that, here’s how to do it…

The way to keep 100% of the profits, even on products that sell for more than $20, and as much as $100 or more, is to acquire resale rights to hot-selling products.

You can find a lot of products that offer resale rights. It’s as easy as doing a search on Google.

But keep in mind that you should choose a hot-selling product.

You also want it to be a product that too many other people aren’t selling. If it’s being sold everywhere on the Internet, it’s probably not the best choice because you may have to compete with too many other sellers of the same, exact product. (There are ways to do that and win, but that strategy is for another time.)

One of the best ways to find a hot seller is to use what you learned in Part 1 of this “how-to” series and look for a product that is very similar to the one(s) that you chose in Part 1.

That way, you will ensure that the product you choose is at least as popular, and in demand, as the affiliate products you selected earlier.

You would also want to choose a product that includes a pre-written sales letter as well as some hot graphics to go along with the sales letter. (This will, again, save you time, effort and money from having to create the sales materials yourself.)

The additional work on your part would include editing the sales materials with your own order links and perhaps your own name at the end of the sales letters, if you choose to personalize the work.

Next, you would need a place on the Internet to put (or upload) the sales materials, so that your potential customers can see it and purchase it.

Of course, the ideal way to do this would be to get a website (domain name and web host) of your own to showcase your new product(s.)

The alternative would be to set up a blog, say via WordPress.com – which won’t cost you anything (unless you want to host the blog via your own site.)

- research a hot product idea
- create the product
- pay money to have somebody create it for you
- write an order-pulling sales letter
- pay someone to create the sales letter for you
- create or buy captivating graphics for your sales letter

The only additional investment – of time, effort, and maybe money – would be to sell it yourself, directly via your own website or a blog interface.

You would still save a ton of investment of your time, effort, and money if you had to do all of the above work yourself, from scratch.

It would still be dramatically easier for you to get resale rights to somebody else’s hot-seller than to have to start from the ground up.

Here’s the key concept to understand and really “get” mentally…

It’s always best to start out with a strategy that involves the least amount of work, even when you’re starting with a guaranteed hot-seller that someone else has already created and tested for you.

The reason is simple. If, for whatever reason, this hot seller doesn’t make you much money, or stops making you enough money after a while, you can very easily (and quickly) switch to another hot seller and get set up to sell it without much investment of time, effort or even cash.

If you were to do all of the work yourself, it would take you a lot longer, and require a lot more effort to switch gears and get set up to sell another new product.

Always remember that you only have 24 hours per day, every day. No more.

So, one of the keys to success – in any area of your life – is to leverage your investment and resources as much as possible.

And, if you want to keep 100% of the profifts from any sales that you generate, finding and selling products that you’ve acquired resale rights to is still one of the quickest and easiest ways to do it.

What does it take to create (or make) money?

Typically, it takes an investment on your part, of some kind, doesn’t it?

Usually that investment is in the form of work/effort/labor, time (to either do the work or to come up with the idea,)…and oftentimes, it also requires an investment of, well, money, i.e. some starting capital, funds to invest, etc.

So… what does it mean to create money “out of thin air?”

Keeping the earlier points in mind, it would imply that creating money out of thin air would require no investment (or very little investment) of your time, effort, or startup cash.

In this particular case, we will focus on making money using the Internet…which would normally require (for starters) that you create or buy a product which you would sell to others.

Obviously, creating your own product would require some investment of your time, effort, and/or money. (Buying a product would certainly require an investment of cash.)

So, how would you create money out of thin air, which (in this case) would entail securing a product to sell?

The quickest and easiest way would be to find an existing product – and partner up with the owner and/or seller of that product.

That may seem like it would require a lot of time and effort on your part, but it really doesn’t…IF you know what kind of product to go for, and where to look.

The best product to sell on the Internet (or anywhere else) is information. Because, unlike any other product, information can be sold over and over again.

You can sell the same information multiple times, without having to do any additional work to create that product. (You cannot do that with any tangible product, like a computer, chair, food, etc. In order to sell a tangible product, you have to create a new one every time you sell one.)

(And, just in case you’re curious…yes, information is a huge money-maker on the Internet. Millions upon millions are made each year by selling informational products. And, you can get a piece of that pie.)

Now, that we’ve chosen the type of product to sell, i.e. informational products, it’s time to find existing products instead of creating your own from scratch – because we want to save time and effort, as always.

One of the best places to find existing informational products is Clickbank.com

Once you’re at the site, just click on the “Promote Products” tab and get set up to promote other people’s hot-selling products for free!

That means, no investment is required, on your part, to…

- research a hot product idea
- create the product , or…
- pay money to have somebody create it for you
- write an order-pulling sales letter, or…
- pay someone to create the sales letter for you
- create or buy captivating graphics for your sales letter
- pay for a domain name and web site hosting

Yes, the product owner/seller (or vendor, in this case) will do all of that for you! (After all, it is his/her product.)

And, the product vendor will often give you up to 75% of the profits for each product that you help him sell!

(Don’t worry, I will show you how to easily promote other people’s products without too much effort or cash investment on your part.)

Now, think about it… wouldn’t it be dramatically easier for you to “plug into” somebody else’s hot-seller and earn a commission than to do all of the work yourself, from scratch?

Wouldn’t that save you a significant amount of investment of your time, effort, and even your hard-earned cash?

Wouldn’t it be a lot easier to have the product vendor do most of the work for you?

Of course it would! That’s why I highly recommend that you start with this method.

Okay…now let’s quickly talk about which kind of product you should market…

In this particular situation, since Clickbank already has a successful marketplace set up, it won’t take up too much of your time or effort to find a hot-selling product.

All you would have to do is click on the “Marketplace” link on Clickbank’s site, and you’ll be shown a whole bunch of popular categories to choose from.

My advice to you would be to choose a category that you personally have a passion for – or at least an interest in. Doing so will ensure that you enjoy – and stick with – this money-making process just a little more than others would.

After you choose at least one category from the Marketplace, the easiest thing to do would be to pick a product (or products) that Clickbank has decided to place towards the top of it’s list. (Hey, why do any extra work when Clickbank is already giving you their best performers/earners, right?)

And, once you’ve looked at their top performers, you can choose the products based on how much commissions they pay you (the higher the better,) which one seems most exciting or appealing to you, etc.

The rest of it doesn’t really matter all that much. Sure, you can do a lot more analyses and discussion about which one is the absolute best product to promote. (If you’re interested in that, let me know.)

But, if you’re starting out, at least in that particular category, just pick something that Clickbank has chosen to be a top performer (i.e. earner) and go with it.

Once you have done that, the only thing left to do is to start promoting that product (using an affliate link with your own personal Clickbank ID embedded within the link. All of that is explained at the “Promote Products” tab at the Clickbank site (which you would have already checked out by now.)

Getting people (or “traffic”) to the product of your choice is a whole other subject. And I will explain all of that in another, upcoming article.

And there you have it. That’s just one of the ways in which you can create money out of thin air, i.e. without doing too much work but instead letting other people do most of the work for you.
