The “No Secrets, No Shortcuts” Principle of Internet Marketing

1 Dec

You can waste a lot of time and money with your internet marketing efforts if you secretly believe there’s some sort of shortcut.  There may be techniques that work and things that are worth learning about.

The typical brand new internet marketer usually kills his productivity and his bank account by signing up for thousands of different lists that are, ultimately, owned by other marketers.  Once a week they’ll receive e-mails that say, “This is it!  This is THE solution that is finally going to make you lots and lots of money!”  The marketer buys the tools, which may or may not work, and is on to the next thing one week later.  Very few marketers stick to one thing long enough to make any of it effective.

At the end of the day, internet marketing is simple.  You need content.  You need lots of it.  You need to distribute it across the internet so that people have a lot of different ways to find you.  Tell as many people as possible about your business, but make sure you’re only telling the people who are likely to care.

Those basic principles lie at the heart of anything else that anyone might try.  Tools which help you create content and distribute content are generally very useful, if they also work in a fashion that helps you build trust with your customers.  Tools which are automated, spammy, or which rely on mass-submissions to people or directories who don’t have anything to do with your business will ultimately harm both your productivity and your reputation as a marketer.

You can increase your productivity by consciously focusing on the activities which will generate returns for your business.  After awhile, it all comes down to action and work.  Even the best software packages and principles turn useless if you don’t make the step from theory into action.

Don’t approach your internet marketing with an attitude of desperation.  People getting involved with internet marketing because they are desperate is a reality.  Many marketers have successfully gone from “broke” to “bucks.”  But you’re in a vulnerable position when you are broke.  You are vulnerable to promises of “big money NOW” because you NEED “big money NOW.”  If you want to overcome this problem, however, you’re going to have to divorce your needs and your emotions from your actions.  You’re going to have to focus on what’s effective over the long term, knowing the results may not be terribly spectacular in the short term.  Making $45 in your first week as an internet marketer, for example, would be some outstanding, awesome results.  That’s not to say you’ll never get to $4,500 a week.  That’s just saying that you need to re-focus and refine your expectations so that you aren’t getting scammed by the next big seminar, training course, or software package.

If you want to buy a tool, talk to other internet marketers.  Find out whether, how, and why those tools were successful for them.  Find out exactly how they used the tools to succeed in their business.  Duplicate that success for yourself.  Put work time into making it happen.  Be productive.  That’s the only way to get to the pinnacle of internet marketing success.

How To Create a Squeeze Page That Converts

26 Nov

If you are trying to build a list, and if you have a website you should be, one of the most important aspects of your site is your squeeze page.

Your squeeze page has one specific job: converting visitors to subscribers. There are a lot of factors involved when creating a high converting squeeze page, but your goal should be to get to a 50% opt-in rate or higher. This means half of the people visiting your squeeze page sign up for your offer.

Here are three quick tips to get your squeeze page converting.

1. Offer something of value.

This sounds pretty obvious but a lot of people seem to forget it. You would be surprised how many marketers hope to get opt-ins while offering outdated, low quality reports filled with affiliate links and little to no valuable information. This simply does not work. You need to offer something of value that your visitors will want. Remember, you are asking for their email address and the ability to continue to contact them, they want something in return to show you aren’t going to fill their inbox with useless emails. Your offer goes a long way in showing your subscribers what to expect from your emails. If your offer is no good, why should they expect better from your emails?

2. Use graphics to help sell your offer.

You want a professional and clean squeeze page. This is very important for increasing conversions. Adding graphics can go a long way with making your squeeze page look professional, just don’t overdo it! Look around at squeeze pages in your niche. What kinds of graphics are they using? Don’t take these graphics, but get an idea of what looks good and try to incorporated professional looking graphics into your squeeze page. This could include things like headers, arrows, bullet points, and ebook covers.

3. Be exciting.

You want your visitors to be excited about subscribing. Your offer should be exciting and valuable. Come up with a catchy title and be sure to tell them why they need to sign up for your offer. Don’t simply talk about the features of your free product or offer, talk about the problems it will solve. For example, rather than explaining your free report contains 5 ways to help eliminate back pain, talk about how after reading this report and implementing what is inside they will be able to spend more time playing with their kids or enjoying activities they have been unable to participate in because of their back pain.

4. Change the text on the submit button for your opt-in box.

For most any autoresponder the default text on the submit button will be ‘Submit.’ Change it up. Turn that button into a call to action, just begging to be clicked. Change it to something like ‘Download Now’ or ‘Send me my free report!’ It helps a lot. It emphasizes that by clicking that button they will be receiving their free gift, which makes them much more likely to do it. This simple change can drastically change your conversion rate for the better.

Should I Use Personalization in Autoresponder Emails

25 Nov

There is a lot of debate between marketers about personalization in your autoresponder emails. Personalization is setting your emails to include the subscriber’s name inside the emails. Many people do this to help raise their open rates and make things more person while others believe it makes emails look more like spam. Ultimately it is up to each individual. It may be for you, it may not. To help you decide, let’s take a look at the pros and cons.

First, take a look at some of the reasons for personalization.

One of the main reasons is it helps get your emails noticed. When someone sees their name they naturally stop and take a second look at the subject line. This increases your chances they will open them. It is also a more subtle and safe way of drawing attention than hyped up subject lines, which can easily get marked as spam or deleted.

Personalized emails also help build relationships by helping the reader feel like there is more of a one-on-one relationship. It also helps indicate permission to send. Even if your reader doesn’t remember putting their name in your opt-in box, the inclusion of their name gives them the idea they asked for this information making them much more likely to read the email expecting to find information they requested or are interested in.

While that all sounds great, there are also several reasons not to use personalization. One of the main reasons is the fact it is your subscriber entering their email. Many do not feel comfortable giving out their name so they will give a fake name. Other times they may misspell it or not use proper capitalization. If any of these happen your personalized email will have these incorrect names which will have the opposite effect, making your emails look more like spam. In fact, some people even use a fake name for the sole purpose of filtering out emails from opt-ins.

Even if their name is correct, personalization can still cause problems. There is also is the possibility of your own error! Always test your emails, the last thing you want to do is mistype your personalization code and send out that email to your subscribers.

Another thing to note is some people don’t like the personal touch of having their name in emails from people they don’t know. If you use personalization, be careful not to overdo it or you could leave your reader feeling uncomfortable.

All and all, personalization is something you will need to decide on your own. Consider your niche and audience. Some audiences respond better to personalization. If you aren’t sure test both and see what your open, click, and unsubscribe rates are. Figure out what works best for you and your list.

3 Tips for Building a Strong Relationship With Your List

24 Nov

As an internet marketer, your list is one of your biggest assets, but how good of an asset it is depends on a few things. What you want is a targeted list of people ready and willing to buy from you. If you want that, you need to build a relationship with your list, which isn’t always the easiest thing if you don’t know how to go about it. These tips may seem pretty basic and common knowledge, but many people seem to forget about them when setting up their autoresponder series or sending our broadcasts. As you read each tip, really think about your own list. Are you really doing all three of these things?

1. Only email your list offers that will benefit them and fit their interests.

If you have a list this is most likely the main way you profit from it. Before you send out a broadcast or set up an autoresponder series, really think on each offer. Ask yourself, “Will this benefit my list? Is it something they will really want?” If the answer is yes, go for it! If the answer is no, trash that email. Sure, you are missing out on some possible profit, but the key is to build trust with your list. Sending offers irrelevant to your list, or even worse, offers that don’t actually benefit them, will cause you to lose both trust and subscribers.

2. Make your emails content rich and interesting.

You want your subscribers to look forward to each and every email. When that email hits their inbox you want them to see your name and think “I should read that right away!” You do this by offering value with each email. Share information in your niche, stories, anything that will get your readers eager to open each and every email you send. You can still pitch, but pitch within your content rich emails so they don’t feel like you are only emailing to pitch to them.

You also want to try and make your emails interesting. Let your personality shine through and let them know you are a person sending these emails. Share stories about yourself, link to your Twitter and Facebook, give them interesting facts. If your readers feel like they know you they will trust you more.

3. Give away freebies.

There is some debate about how often you should give freebies, but everyone agrees they are a great way to build trust and keep your list happy. Of course, don’t give away any old freebie, give them quality freebies that they will love. For instance, if you find a good, high quality PLR report in your niche, it could be a great freebie. Don’t feel like you can’t put an affiliate link or two in there though!

All of these tips basically come down to the same thing: keep your lists interests in mind. You want to appear more like a trusted friend or adviser than a salesperson. Always think about whether or not  your readers will find value in your emails before you send them and your list will become more trusting and much more responsive.

Creating Subject Lines That Capture Attention

23 Nov

In email marketing your subject line is like your headline. It is the first thing your subscriber sees and the main factor in their decision to read your email, not read it, or delete it. Obviously your subject line is something that deserves a bit of thought then, right? So how do you craft the perfect attention grabbing subject line that begs to be clicked on?

There is no sure-fire formula that will guarantee your email gets opened, but there are several things you can do to increase your chances. As you read through this article, think about the your current autoresponder campaigns and how you can improve your subject lines to get more opens.

Don’t forget the “from” line. I don’t mean you need to change your name on your email or anything, I mean don’t forget it is there. Your subscriber will see who the email is from so there is no need to repeat it in the subject line. Rather, you should use that space to draw attention to your email. If your message is part of a newsletter, it can be helpful to brand your newsletter by having the name of the newsletter in the subject line, otherwise let the “from” line do its job!

Keep your subject line short. Many email clients have a character limit, sometimes as low as 50 characters, for the subject line so you need to get what you want to say out there in as few words as possible. You don’t want your subject line to be cut off in the middle of an important word or before an important point!

Don’t make your subject line spam-line. Not only can this get your email deleted or marked as spam, it can also get it sent right to the junk box without hitting the inbox. Avoid exclamation points or strange, non-standard characters. If you are offering something free, don’t use “free” as the first word in your subject line. Many spam filters will filter your email for it. Instead put it a few words in. You also want to be honest about what is included in the email.

If you are stuck for ideas, two great ways to come up with subject lines are using interesting things in the news, or using open ended questions. Read newspapers, watch the news, and see if you can apply those to your emails when writing subject lines. Especially with controversial news, these can be great for drawing attention.

In the end though, like most things with list building, it comes down to knowing your niche and audience, then testing to see what gives you the best results. Test different subject lines and keep track of your stats. Figure out what works best for your list.
