How to find long tail, low competition keywords?
Go to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal and type some general keyword around your site/product you want to promote. For example ‘herbal remedies’. Check ‘Only show ideas closely related to my search terms’. On the left menu select [Exact] in Match Types. Now Sort the keywords by local monthly searches. Here is what I got:
Herbal remedies keyword is getting 9,900 exact searches a month. Let’s type this keyword on Google. There are 12,400,000 results. Quite a lot! 🙂 Now let’s put it in quotes, so search for “herbal remedies”. Using quotes will give a much better representation of the competition. I got 22,700,000 results. In most cases you’ll see a much lower number for long tail keywords.
Let’s check this keyword: chinese herbal remedies. It’s getting 590 searches a month. The competition on Google without quotes is 10,200,000 and with quotes only 159,000! Now that’s a much better number.
Your job will be to look for the keywords with the most searches and the lowest with quotes competition on Google. These keywords will be easy to rank on Google and you should easily get on the first page.
Look for keywords with at least 500 exact local searches/month and <100,000 competition with quotes.
