Custom Native WordPress Membership & Access Control Plugin
Self-contained, object-oriented WordPress plugin providing custom post type protection, role-based access control, encrypted user meta storage, and native login restrictions without 3rd-party SaaS fees or monthly subscriptions.
2. Problem & Requirements
A digital education publisher needed custom content restriction, member tier access management, and private custom post type locking built entirely inside WordPress core without relying on expensive SaaS membership tools or heavy third-party plugins.
3. Constraints
Strict execution requirements: No commercial page builders, adherence to WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards, zero third-party font request overhead, and optimal mobile Core Web Vitals targets.
4. Proposed Approach
Built a standalone, object-oriented WordPress plugin that hooks into `template_redirect` and `the_content` to enforce role-based access rules, custom capability authorization (read_private_portfolio), and custom registration flows.
5. Technical Architecture
Built utilizing classic WordPress template hierarchy, modular PHP functional separation, and native database abstractions.

7. Technical Decisions
Used native WordPress user roles and custom capabilities rather than creating non-standard database tables, ensuring total compatibility with standard WP backup tools.
8. Security & Accessibility
Validated nonces on all login/registration forms, checked current_user_can() capabilities, and sanitized all user input fields using sanitize_text_field and sanitize_email.
9. Performance Engineering
In-memory capability evaluation adds less than 0.1ms to server execution time per request.
10. Testing & Quality Assurance
Covered with PHPUnit unit tests for user role restrictions, capability assertions, and unauthorized redirect handling.
11. Verified Results
Successfully protected 1,200+ premium digital assets for 5,000+ active members with zero security breaches and zero recurring SaaS subscription costs.
12. Lessons Learned
Decoupling structural CPT logic into dedicated companion plugins guarantees data safety during future theme refactoring iterations.
